Cleveland-Cliffs' Middletown plant produces hot rolled coil, cold rolled coil, hot-dipped galvanised (HDG) and electro-galvanised (EG) steel products. Middletown is one of the highest-end producers of steel in the US capable of producing interstitial-free slabs for enamelling and ultra-low carbon slabs. The facility has one blast furnace, "3", which holds a hot metal output rate of 2.1 Mtpa. Middletown Works had been selected by Cleveland-Cliffs for a transition from the traditional BF-BOF route to a hydrogen-ready DRI and EAF configuration. The project aimed to lower emissions and position the plant for low-carbon steel production. However, the company later cancelled the plan as the economics deteriorated. High capital costs and the lack of viable hydrogen supply undermined the business case. The existing integrated route therefore remains the most practical option in the near term.
