Asset Report
Newman iron ore mine
Report summary
Newman is BHP's largest Pilbara based mining and processing hub with several large capacity surface mines, including Mt Whaleback (Orebodies 29,30 and 35), Eastern Ridge (Orebodes 23, 24 and 25) and Orebody 18. They all make up the BHP Newman Joint Venture. Together, these deposits produce, on average, 78 Mtpa. Newman is BHP's oldest and highest cost Pilbara operation. Contributing to its cost position is the higher average strip ratio of 2.7:1 and the longer average haul distances to crushers owing to the depth of the Mt Whaleback pit. Costs are expected to be lower in 2024 due to higher throughput and cooling inflation. In the long term, costs will gradually increase as Mt Whaleback ages.
