Newman is BHP's largest Pilbara based mining and processing hub with several large capacity surface mines including Mt Whaleback (Orebodies 29,30 and 35), Eastern Ridge (Orebodes 23, 24 and 25) and Orebody 18. They all make up the BHP Newman Joint Venture. Together these deposits produce about 80 Mtpa. Newman is BHP's oldest and highest cost Pilbara operation. Contributing to its cost position is the higher average strip ratio of 2.7:1 and the longer average haul distances to crushers owing to the depth of the Mt Whaleback pit. The lower cost OB18 and Eastern Ridge deposits will offset rising costs at Mt Whaleback and we expect cash costs at Newman in 2017 and 2018 will continue to fall, before rising again in 2019 due to higher fuel prices and general inflationary pressures.
