Report summary

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation's (NSSMC) Oita plant located on the southwest island of Kyushu produces only hot rolled coil and plate. The plant includes two huge blast furnaces (5,775 cubic metres each) which are among the largest the world and are the biggest in Japan. Recent years has seen the plant producing record levels of crude steel and it has the capacity to produce 9.9Mtpa. Major projects include a reline of the No.1 blast furnace, an expansion of the plate mill (20 billion Yen) and the addition of a new 1 Mtpa coke battery ending the plant's dependence on merchant coke supplies.
