Palabora is the only copper mine in South Africa. A consortium of Chinese and South African companies acquired the operation from Anglo American and Rio Tinto in 2013. They then took the company private in 2014. Following board approval for the development of the Lift II expansion, production is expected until 2034. Current works include the installation of a new ventilation shaft for the Lift II project, with completion expected by 2022.
