Serra Leste is a surface mine owned and operated by Vale located in the Carajás region, Pará state, Brazil. The operation is approximately 50 kilometres northeast of the Serra Norte mine and 5 kilometres from Serra Pelada — the site of a large artisanal gold rush in the 1980s. Serra Leste produces a mix of fines and concentrate products primarily for the seaborne export market. Serra Leste remained closed between early 2019 and late 2020. The stoppage came after Vale reached the limit of the area previously licensed for the extraction of iron ore and faced delays to obtain pertinent approvals from the Environment and Sustainability Department of the State of Pará (SEMAS) to mine a new high-grade section of the main Serra Leste pit. Just by the end of 2020, in November, Vale announced the receipt of the green light from SEMAS to resume operations at Serra Leste as well as expand the project's capacity by over 65% by 2028.
