Asset Report
Serra Norte (Northern System) iron ore mine
Report summary
Serra Norte is a large surface mine owned and operated by Vale located in the Carajás region, Pará state, Brazil. The operation is comprised of a fully-integrated mine/rail/port system and produces both fines and concentrate products which are either transferred to the São Luís pellet plant or sold to external customers. Serra Norte's production sequentially fell in 2019 and 2020 as a result of a mix of unscheduled maintenance stoppages on crushers and beneficiation plants, delays in opening a new mining section and weather-related disruptions. We expect Serra Norte's production to gradually recover over the next years, eventually reaching a steady-state rate by 2030. In 2018, Vale approved a sustaining investment at Serra Norte aimed at recovering pellet feed from its tailings dams — the so-called Gelado project, which started-up operations in late 2022.
