Commissioning of the open pit and heap leaching of gold oxide ore commenced in the fourth quarter of 2015. Shahuindo is an intermediate-sulphidation sediment-hosted epithermal gold deposit exploited by conventional open pit mining methods. Ore is heap leached and then undergoes carbon adsorption, elution, electrowinning and smelting, producing gold and silver dore as final products. Production strategy at the start of the project included two phases: Phase I includes a 10kt/d of run of mine ore of coarse grain. The capacity was expected to progressively increase. In 2017 the processing rate was 15kt/d ore and by the end of 2018 the processing rate reached 18kt/d ore. Phase II was expected to increase the processing capacity to 36kt/d ore processing mixed coarse-and-fine-grain ore that requires crushing and agglomeration prior to leaching.
