The refinery was commissioned in July 1983 as part of an integrated mine/mill/smelter/refinery project undertaken by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman. The smelter/refinery site is located 250km northwest of Muscat and 30km inland from the Golf of Oman coast. The capital cost of the refinery was US$14.6M, and at commissioning the nameplate capacity was 20kt/a cathode.
