Asset Report
TauTona (from 1988) (Closed) gold mine
Report summary
TauTona was an underground operation using scattered-grid mining methods. Due to the extreme depths of mining, rockbursts were a problem but frequency and severity were reduced by attention to rock mechanics and improved mining practices. The 3.6Mt/a No 2 plant (formerly part of the Savuka complex) was utilised. The plant comprised conventional carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processing with Merrill Crowe precipitation. The mine was placed into orderly closure in 2017 due to severe production challenges and operational inefficiencies, low productivity, and a nearly depleted ore reserve.
