Telfer gold mine
Report summary
Telfer is a gold-copper mine in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia, approximately 450 km from Port Hedland. Telfer was the flagship asset of Newcrest Mining at the company's formation in 1990, and is one of Australia's largest gold producers. The original gold mining operations were suspended in 2000 due to high costs, having produced 6 Moz of gold. A subsequent drilling program outlined further mineralisation and an expanded open-pit copper and gold operation started in late 2004 underground mining commenced in early 2006. Underground mining capacity is 6Mt/a and surface mining ore capacity is 18Mt/a.
