The Uralsk refinery was commissioned in 1939 together with a smelter of the same name. The refinery had far greater capacity than required by the integrated smelter so excess output was supplied to other smelters in Russia, including Kandalaksha and Sayansk. Since the closure of the associated smelter in 2013, the entire output is supplied to smelters within Rusal portfolio. In addition, the refinery produces some volumes of non-metallurgical grade alumina.
