Viga iron ore mine
Report summary
Viga is a mid-sized surface mine owned and operated by Vale located near the town of Congonhas in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The operation produces a concentrate product which is typically sold into the seaborne export market. Prior to Vale's ownership, Viga used to be owned by Ferrous Resources. However, in December 2018, Vale entered into a definitive agreement to buy Ferrous in a deal that was just settled a few months later after Brazil's antitrust regulator, CADE, gave the green light for the transaction to be finalised. Ferrous was in the process of commissioning the so-called 'Viga 4+' project which was primarily designed to allow Viga to produce a high-grade concentrate product from low-grade itabirites. After Vale's acquisition, we now include Viga's production and reserves under the company's Paraopeba complex.
