The Zaldívar deposit is located at an average elevation of 3300m above sea level and forms part of a large Tertiary porphyry copper system that also includes the Escondida mine. As of 2012 Zaldívar was primarily an open pit heap leach copper mine. An analysis of this operation is the subject of a separate profile.
