Bakken to the future: What's next for Bakken NGLs?
Report summary
After a brief hiatus, Bakken E&P activity is ramping up due to strength in oil prices and new crude takeaway. Associated gas production is on the rise as well with November hitting a new record of 2.09 bcfd. Gas gathering and processing infrastructure is limited in the Bakken and anywhere between 11% to 15% of the gas is flared at the wellhead. Further, Bakken gas is one of the richest in the country with NGL content averaging 8 gals of NGL per Mcf of gas. Drilling for oil and a mandate to reduce gas flaring are both leading to Bakken NGL growth, but compared to the Permian, new Bakken NGL infrastructure investment is just a trickle. How strongly can Bakken gas and NGLs grow and will existing infrastructure be challenged? In this insight, we dive deep into the Bakken's history, planned NGL infrastructure and the potential for upcoming production constraints.
