When investing in large-scale renewable energy projects, the oil and gas majors will find different business models, geographies and technologies will offer different returns. As government support for renewables is reduced, new business models with higher degrees of merchant risk are emerging - this may suit the majors better than smaller, risk-averse competitors. This is the third report in a series of three, analyzing the potential opportunities and challenges for the oil and gas majors in the renewable energy sector. The first, Oil and gas majors in renewable energy: The hunt for the best returns, was published in September, while the second, Oil & gas majors in renewable energy: Where to invest along the renewable energy value chain? was published in October.
