Despite being Africa’s largest crude oil producer, Nigeria’s ageing refineries have struggled to operate, resulting in the country being a significant net importer of refined products. The refurbishment project of 400,000 b/d capacity NNPC assets, started in 2020 and has yet to be completed, maintaining Nigeria as a European gasoline import hub of an average 200,000 b/d.
