Conventional exploration started in the 1940s and a total of 136 wells have been drilled in the basin, 29 of which have encountered hydrocarbons. Development of unconventional resources in the Cantabrian Basin is at a very preliminary stage. In the near-term a number of acreage holders are expected to drill vertical wells in order to better understand the subsurface.
