Cardium tight oil unconventional play
Report summary
The Cardium play is a hybrid sandstone/shale play located in west Alberta. Its hydrocarbon potential is well known and understood, with conventional oil production having begun in the 1950s, and peaking at over 150,000 b/d in the 1970s. In 2008, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing started to unlock the very tight potential of the play, and horizontal drilling has since accelerated rapidly.
