Egypt began exploring tight gas and shale oil potential in its onshore basins in the early 2010s. The resource potential is thought to be abundant particularly in the Western Desert basin. Shell and Apache piloted the Apollonia project in 2012. The project consisted of three horizontal wells targeting tight gas in the Apollonia chalk formation. Hydraulic fracturing with foam resulted in production rates of 1 mmcfd on extended test.
