The San Juan Basin Fruitland CBM play, located in southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico, is the most successful CBM play in North America, having cumulatively produced 17 tcf of gas.  Initial growth from the basin was supported by deregulation of gas markets in the 1970s.  Tax benefits (specifically the Section 29 tax credit) during the 1980s provided further support during the initial stages of development.  The tax credits that aided the production boom have since expired.
