The Karoo Basin covers around 610,000 square kilometres (237,000 square miles), and its size and geology lends itself to potentially enormous volumes of unconventional shale gas. Prospectivity is greatest in the south west of the basin, where the shales have a high organic content, are thermally mature and sufficiently thick.
