The Bazhenov Formation is the principal source rock of the West Siberian petroleum system and one of the world's largest tight oil resources. Pilots, foreign partnerships and a federal technology programme have demonstrated horizontal drilling and multistage fracturing, but output remains small relative to the resource base and past government ambitions. This report assesses whether the Bazhenov can move from pilot to commercial scale. It covers geology and sweet-spot criteria, competing resource estimates, formation-specific tax relief, the impact of sanctions on domestic drilling and completion capability, key companies and brownfield infrastructure. We select US Lower 48 analogues, build a Bazhenov type well and model well-level economics across exploration, appraisal and development scenarios. We also identify the indicators that will show whether a manufacturing-scale development programme is emerging.
