Previously a net exporter of oil and gas, the industry in Tunisia is now mature, and the country has had to turn to imports to satisfy its rapidly growing domestic demand. Operators have historically been attracted to the country by generous fiscal terms, and a heavy-fuel oil-linked gas price which is one of the highest in North Africa. The shales found in the south of Tunisia may provide the basis for a shale gas development. Shale gas development is currently in its very early stages in Tunisia, as operators are attracted to easier conventional gas fields.
