The Abbey field lies in the Southern Gas Basin, 40 kilometres northeast of the Easington gas terminal. It was discovered by Amoco in 1974 and was known as Artemis. Despite testing gas from the Permian Rotliegendes formation, it wasn't appraised until 1988. Despite testing gas again, Amoco relinquished the acreage.
