Block 1 South East contains three small oil discoveries - Al Karkara, A North and A South - which are located approximately 90 kilometres to the east of Doha. The discoveries were initially considered to be non-commercial. However, in the late 1990s a joint venture of Japanese companies - Cosmo Oil and Sojitz Corporation - completed a successful re-appraisal campaign, leading to a commercial development.
