The Azar field, one of Iran's recent discoveries in the prolific Zagros fold belt, lies 10 kilometres south of Mehran and near the Iran-Iraq border. The field shares hydrocarbon resources with Iraq's Badra field. Owned by the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), Azar holds an estimated 2.4 billion barrels of stock tank oil initially in place (STOIIP).
