The Ebla Gas Development comprises two onshore gas fields — Ash Shaer and Cherrife — located in the Palmyrides Basin in central Syria. Operated by Petro-Canada Palmyra B.V., a Suncor Energy subsidiary, the project started production in April 2010 with initial operations focused on the Ash Shaer field. Before the Cherrife field could be brought online, deteriorating security conditions and the imposition of international sanctions forced Suncor to declare Force Majeure in December 2011.
