The super-giant Gachsaran field is Iran's second-largest oil field, with around 67 billion barrels of oil initially in place. It is located in the prolific Zagros Basin, 220 kilometres from the city of Ahvaz and close to the town of Dogonbadan in southwest Iran. Production from the field's Asmari reservoir started in 1929, making Gachsaran one of Iran's oldest oil fields, alongside Masjed-e-Soleyman and Haft Gel.
