The Greater Nile Oil Project (GNOP) is located in the Muglad - Sudd Rift Basin and originally consisted of five blocks, which now straddle the Sudan - South Sudan border. On 9 July 2011, South Sudan gained independence from the rest of Sudan. Since then, Blocks 1A and 1B of the GNOP are wholly in South Sudan, while Block 4 crosses the border.
