Hassi R'Mel is the largest gas field in Algeria. It has underpinned the country's gas production for six decades and is still comfortably the largest producing field. It is located around 400 kilometres south of Algiers and acts as the national gas distribution hub.Since coming onstream in the 1960s, gross gas production ramped up with demand through to the 1990s.
