Gas demand in LatAm will continue to grow and regional supply will only partially meet it, requiring more imports. Although multiple countries are over-resourced in gas, there’s not enough investment to develop the projects, mainly due to unattractive economics and insufficient infrastructure. Increasing the gas supply is viewed as the right strategy in the region, but case study timelines don’t offer optimism. Above-ground risks in Venezuela, fiscal changes in Colombia and insufficient infrastructure in Guyana are delaying investment decisions. By contrast, a new fiscal framework in Argentina can finally accelerate the development of pipeline and liquefaction infrastructure. There are two options to develop offshore gas: pipe to shore or process it into LNG. This primarily concerns Colombia, Guyana and Suriname. Onshore gas should be easier to develop but, in both Argentina and Peru’s case, new pipeline capacity for domestic markets is required.
