The Intisar fields were discovered in Concession 103 initially awarded to Occidental Libya in 1966. The company had success with its first exploration well which encountered hydrocarbons within the Palaeocene section of a carbonate reef. Subsequent exploration wells proved up further reefs on what became a major hydrocarbon play in the Sirte Basin. Oil production began in 1968 from two fields and peaked at 575,000 b/d in 1970.
