Khazzan is a major tight gas project in central Oman, around 280 kilometres southwest of capital Muscat. Operator BP took FID on the first phase of development in December 2013, achieving first gas 45 months later in September 2017. The field produces 1 bcfd of gas. A second phase of development, sanctioned in 2018, will increase output to 1.5 bcfd. The second phase is currently due onstream in 2021. The field is hugely technically challenging, but has seen significant cost reductions due to better than expected reservoir performance. There remains large upside through possible future expansion.
