The Kitan oil field was discovered in 2008. It was located in the Timor-Leste/Australia Joint Petroleum Development Area (JPDA), around 150 kilometres from the Timor-Leste coast and 350 kilometres from the Australian coastline. This area is now within Timor-Leste's exclusive economic zone. The initial development comprised of three subsea wells on the Kitan field, tied back to the Glas Dowr leased floating production storage and offtake (FPSO) facility.
