The Kitan oil field was discovered in 2008. It is located in the Timor Leste/Australia Joint Petroleum Development Area (JPDA), around 150 kilometres from the Timor-Leste coast and 350 kilometres from the Australian coastline. First production from Kitan was achieved in October 2011. The field was shut-in during December 2015 as it was no longer commercial in a prolonged low oil price environment.
