Kupe is an offshore gas-condensate development located 30 km from the South Taranaki coast. The Kupe South field was discovered in December 1986 by New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) (now Echelon Resources). A further four exploration and appraisal wells were drilled, however development did not proceed due to low oil and domestic gas prices at the time. Improving prices led to a re-evaluation of field development and FEED commenced in June 2004. FID was taken in June 2006. Production began in December 2009 from three development wells on an unmanned wellhead platform. A 30 kilometre subsea pipeline connects the wellhead platform to the onshore Kupe Production Station operated by Beach Energy.
