Latin America month in brief: offshore opportunities at center stage
Report summary
The offshore sector made big waves in Latin America this June, with new discoveries, licensing success and a major FID announcement. Onshore, smaller fields across the region drew focus from new licensing and acquisition activity. Mexico's shallow-water bid round closed on a high note. Two-thirds of the fifteen areas offered were awarded. We analyse who the biggest winners were and how this round fits into the ongoing process of Mexico's energy opening. New discoveries made by bpTT could have a significant long-term impact on Trinidad's gas outlook, while the company has also sanctioned its Angelin field development. Guyana's biggest discovery, the Liza project, had its Final Investment Decision (FID) announced this month, showing its global attractiveness. Smaller onshore opportunities for exploration acreage and producing fields in Brazil, Ecuador and Bolivia advanced, while Suriname celebrates the award of two new offshore exploration blocks.
