The MacKay River project is located in the Athabasca region of Alberta, 30 kilometres to the northwest of Fort McMurray and just south of Suncor's MacKay River project. The project is being developed using Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) technology. The project received regulatory approval in December 2011, approximately two years after the initial submission of the application.
