Report summary
Despite 13 wells, no commercial volumes of oil or gas have yet been discovered in Malta. Maritime boundary disputes with Italy, Tunisia, and Libya have impeded exploration in these areas. In order to transition into a gas-based economy, Malta's first LNG facility began operation in 2017. Plans for a pipeline connecting Malta to Italy are also in place.
