The giant Manifa oilfield lies a few kilometres off Saudi Arabia's east coast, mainly in shallow waters of less than 10 metres in depth. The initial development in the 1960s comprised a single offshore platform and a small number of production wells. Manifa's reserves provide a source of huge incremental oil supply, and in 2006 Saudi Aramco announced the start of a large-scale redevelopment, with the aim of increasing oil production capacity to 900,000 b/d.
