The Nanuq accumulation was discovered in 2000, sanctioned in late 2004 and developed as a satellite of the Alpine field. Fiord, another Alpine satellite field, was developed in tandem with Nanuq. These three fields are situated within the Colville River Unit, located 55 kilometres (34 miles) to the west of the Kuparuk River Unit, on Alaska's North Slope. A fourth field, Qannik, is also a part of the unit and came onstream in July 2008.
