The Mandji area contains 13 onshore and two offshore oil fields that are exploited by onshore wells. The small discoveries were made in the 1950s and 1960s by SPAEF, the predecessor of Total Gabon (now TotalEnergies Gabon). Port Gentil - the oldest commercial discovery in Gabon - came onstream in 1957. The fields produce from Cretaceous sandstone reservoirs in the Port Gentil Trough.
