The Orion in situ project is located near Hilda Lake in the Cold Lake oil sands area of Alberta. The project is being developed using Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) technology. Following a successful pilot project that lasted over eight years, Orion was approved for commercial development in 2005 by BlackRock, its former operator. Shell acquired the project in 2006.
