The Powder River Basin is a play historically driven by coal-bed methane and legacy production. With 9 main horizontal reservoir targets including the Frontier, Parkman, Turner, Niobrara, Mowry, Muddy, Sussex and Shannon, the play has been looked to for horizontal development since 2012. The PRB saw peak horizontal activity in 2014, but with the downturn, operators quickly stopped exploration efforts and drilling came to an all time low in 2016. With a recovery around the corner, both private and public operators look to the PRB with optimism for stacked pay, in hopes of further de-risking the basin. In this Key Play report, we focus attention on the horizontal development of the PRB and how the 9 reservoirs perform throughout the basin.
