Deal Insight
Shell acquires majority interest and operatorship of North Platte
Report summary
On 29 June 2022, Equinor announced the sale of a 51% working interest in North Platte, which will be renamed Sparta, and transfer of operatorship to Shell. Equinor will retain 49% interest in the project. The deal is timely. Recall the previous partner and operator – TotalEnergies – walked away from the project in February 2022. Equinor's 100% interest quickly became a sell-down candidate as it was unlikely that the Euro Major would develop the nearly US$5 billion project as the sole interest owner.
