The Southern Area gas fields comprise several deep, non-associated sweet-gas fields discovered in the 1990s and 2000s in an area close to the southern tip of the Ghawar field. The discoveries resulted from Saudi Aramco's substantial exploration campaign targeting pre-Khuff reservoirs.
