The Suncor Base Mine began development in the 1960s, representing the first commercial oil sands mining project. The oil sand is recovered using conventional mining techniques, from which bitumen is extracted and then upgraded into Synthetic Crude Oil (SCO). Upgraders at the mining project are also used to upgrade bitumen produced from Suncor's nearby SAGD operations, namely Firebag.
