Suncor holds a number of leases near its mining operation that are being developed using Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD), known as the Firebag project. Covering part of the Athabasca oil sands deposit in northeastern Alberta, Suncor's Firebag leases are situated approximately 40 kilometres to the northeast of its mining leases.
