Energy companies are reporting record profits while consumers face unaffordable increases in their bills. Many politicians, including the UN Secretary General, portray the companies as gouging citizens and demand a reset. Shell’s CEO recently accepted that some government intervention is inevitable but urged that any windfall policy is “smart”. Our review of new windfall terms – and the industry’s reaction to them – highlights several themes.
