The Yanbu zinc smelter project in Saudi Arabia was conceived around the Jabali oxidic ore deposit in Yemen. This deposit was first explored in 1984 in the search for sulphidic zinc deposits. Originally the concept was for a zinc smelter to be built at the Jabali mine site. The Jabali deposit is located 110km north-east of Yemen's capital Sana'a.
