SEC 2025: Why the SEAPEX region still needs high-impact exploration

The critical role of high-impact exploration in securing energy supply and sustainability

1 minute read

We were delighted to kick off May by attending and speaking at SEC 2025, an event that connects industry leaders from around the globe to discuss the key issues shaping the energy sector in the Asia-Pacific region, including petroleum and natural gas exploration, development, and production.

During the event, we explored why high-impact exploration is essential, especially in the SEAPEX region. As the energy landscape evolves, exploration plays a critical role in driving new supply, reducing carbon intensity, and unlocking long-term value. The need for exploration that supports economic growth and decarbonisation has never been more pressing.

Why high-impact exploration still has a role to play globally and in region

Exploration remains vital for replacing reserves and creating value. It can lower costs, reduce carbon intensity, and benefit both resource holders and explorers. With resilient demand, investment in new supply is essential. High-impact exploration, particularly targeting large resources to support new infrastructure hubs, offers a compelling opportunity to meet both economic and decarbonisation goals.

In our presentation, “New fields are better than old: Why the SEAPEX region still needs high-impact exploration,” we shared insights into:

  • Exploration hotspots to watch in 2025

  • Why the world is very short of advantaged oil and gas

  • The current landscape of majors and NOC production in Asia

  • Why deepwater and frontier areas offer the best opportunities for high-impact results
